Naropa University was first accredited by the North Central Association in 1986 and following a thorough review, again in  2000. Institutional accreditation evaluates an entire institution and accredits it as a whole. We recently completed a thorough self-study in preparation for our next comprehensive accreditation site visit and evaluation by the NCA’s Higher Learning Commission in March of 2010. This self-study gathered evidence on all aspects of the University’s functioning and analyzed how well we meet the HLC’s five accreditation criteria to:

  1. Articulate our mission and ensure that we act in accordance with it.
  2. Plan for the future and provide the resources to fulfill our mission.
  3. Teach well, according to our distinctive aspirations.
  4. Cultivate a life of learning, inquiry, creativity, practice, and social responsibility throughout the university.
  5. Engage with the world “both to meet it as it is and to change it for the better,” as called for by our Mission Statement.

To accomplish this self-study, in the spring of 2008, then-President Thomas Coburn appointed a Self-Study Steering Committee of faculty and staff along with student and trustee representatives. The Steering Committee gathered input from students, staff, faculty, administrators, and the University’s Board of Trustees as well as quantitative data on our effectiveness and our capacity to fulfill our mission. While much of the evidence needed for the self-study already exists, the Steering Committee also commissioned surveys and studies in order to provide the most complete picture of the University. Next, the Steering Committee, along with the University’s senior management and groups of faculty, staff, students, and Board members, evaluated this evidence and drafted a report. A core group completed the writing and design of the final self-study report in January 2010, and with President Lord’s approval submitted it to the HLC.

The Self-Study Report is available in PDF form as well as in the Allen Ginsberg Library on Naropa’s Arapahoe Campus. Copies as also available on our Nalanda and Paramita campuses.

The next step in the accreditation process is a site visit by representatives of the Higher Learning Commission to Naropa University March 8-10, 2010. As part of this process, the public is invited to submit comments regarding the University:
