Sabbatical Projects 2009-10

Reed Bye: Fall '09, Spring '10
Reed will spend part of his sabbatical year studying Modernist prosody in the works of Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein and William Carlos Williams, all of whom were concerned with issues of rhythmic process in their writing. He hopes to develop a manuscript for publication. He also plans to record a collection of his songs, edit his poetry for publication, and participate in two solitary meditation practice retreats in order to deepen his meditative and contemplative practice.

Jane Carpenter: Spring '10 (second semester TBD)
Over the course of her two-semester sabbatical, Jane plans to deepen her spiritual practice and study in areas that will enhance her teaching in Contemplative Psychology. She will attend Dharma programs; study photography, Chinese calligraphy and painting; and continue her training as a teacher of Ikebana.  Additionally, Jane plans to continue research and writing articles already in progress.

Carla Clements: Spring '10
Carla plans to complete several manuscripts she has been working on, including “Interactions between Intention and Randomly Generated Images” and “A Transpersonal Model of Psychological Injury, Health and Transformation.” She also hopes to conduct research with new infant families on the concept of “compassionate attachment,” to study and eventually write about transformation as a key agent of Transpersonal Psychology, and to research the effects of wilderness interventions on youth addictive behaviors.  She also hopes to rejuvenate her spiritual practice through yoga training and practice.

Roger Dorris: Fall '09, Spring '10
Roger plans to focus on three areas involving body-speech-mind components. He will focus on physical well-being through exercise, diet and work with Emotional Freedom Techniques. The speech component will include writing a manual devoted to the practice of community-based process work, and work on a collection of essays tentatively titled The Contemplative Change-Agent: A New Paradigm for 21st Century Ministry. To address the “mind” aspect, he will take
part in meditation retreats and a study of recent developments within the Shambhala Buddhist practice tradition.

Ethie Friend: Spring '10
Ethie will devote the semester to the creation of an original vocal performance piece, continued training in voice and physical theater, and pursuit of professional acting opportunities. Ethie plans to apply extended voice work to the traditional “art song” form, and will pursue coaching and training in New York with Meredith Monk. She hopes to further her training in physical theater by working with Stephen Wangh on an exploration of selections from Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Anne Parker: Fall '09, Spring '10
Anne plans to engage in five interrelated activities to enhance her academic and professional life.  Specifically, she will research Black Madonna sites in France, continue working on three books currently in progress, devote time and attention to her recently-founded Boulder Center for the Art of the Master Builders, travel and volunteer with the UN or other international agency, and spend some time in retreat.
