Position 27
Name of Submitting Department: TCP, Art Therapy Track
Type of graduate assistant position: Research Support, Administrative Support
Hours per week: 10
Additional considerations: Our needs in art therapy require that we ask for a 2-semester GA position. Unfortunately, a summer position does not serve our needs.
The Naropa Community Art Studio (NCAS) is our research laboratory for studying various models of social engagement through art. For several years now we have been investigating the territory of practice where art is therapeutic without being clinical. This unique terrain has afforded us many opportunities. For example, we have presented our findings at national conferences. We have also published this work, hopefully with more articles on the way. These accomplishments could not have materialized without a GA position.
The RA will be instrumental in conducting literature searches, gathering data for projects, and helping to set the research agenda for that year. Faculty are also aided in various ways by the GA. For example, I plan to compile and organize a detailed collection of transpersonal material on art therapy. The GA position will help complete this large project.
Finally, the NCAS has become a featured public relations model for NU, representing a service oriented success story that both serves students and marginalized members of our larger community. Next year we plan to move more towards working more with student services at NU as well as the counseling center. We hope to offer more services to the NU community and need the GA position to help facitiltate this process.
As a program, we will continue to pioneer this field within the larger field of art therapy. We have received national recognition for this work. Therefore, we hope to build on our established momentum. Without an GA, our future successes would be in serious jeopardy.
