Wireless Information for Students
Where is the coverage of the wireless network?
Currently all three campuses have coverage. Click here for a wireless network map of the Arapahoe campus.
What is a wireless internet network?
A wireless internet network will allow you to access the internet from your personal laptop without the need and/or use of a cable. You will be able to utilize the internet on campus, indoors and outdoors, as long as your laptop is capable of wireless networking.
How is this possible?
Naropa University has installed Wireless Access Points around campus. Once your laptop has been setup to use the network, your wireless card will automatically detect a signal from these access points. If your laptop detects a signal, you will be able to access the internet just as you would if you were in the computer lab or on your home computer. The strength of the signal detected will determine the speed of the internet on your laptop: a weak (low) signal will provide slightly slower access than a stronger (higher) signal.
Where are the “hot spots” on campus?
A hot spot is a location where there is a wireless signal. The hot spots are:
Arapahoe Campus
- Computer lab in the Administration Building basement
- Lounge outside of the computer lab
- Courtyard area between the Administration Building, Lincoln and the library
- Student lounge in Sycamore Hall
- Sycamore Hall
- Areas between Sycamore Hall and PAC
- Areas between Juniper Cottage and Cedar Cottage
- The main parking lot
Paramita Campus
- The entirety of Paramita is covered
Nalanda Campus
- The front offices
- The primary and overflow parking lots
- The north parking lot (partial coverage)
- Events center
- Main hallway south end of building
Is my laptop capable of wireless internet?
Most newer laptops will come with a wireless card preinstalled in the machine. If your laptop does not have a preinstalled wireless card, you will need to purchase one. Naropa University Information Technology recommends any Linksys 802.11b or 802.11g wireless networking cards. But any wireless network adapter that is a 802.11b or 802.11g should work on the Naropa student wireless network. 802.11n adapters are not supported at this time. Naropa does not offer wireless printing at this time.
Where can I purchase a wireless network card?
A wireless 802.11b or 802.11g card can be purchased at just about any computer or office store or electronics store (i.e. Office Depot, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.). You may chose to purchase a wireless network card online at such websites as Amazon.com. bestbuy.com, officemax.com, etc.
I have the wireless network card installed.
Now what do I do?
Click here to download instructions on how to setup your laptop on Naropa's Wireless Network.
If you need further help you can bring your laptop to the computer lab help desk in the basement of the Administration Building. The staff in the computer lab should be able to setup your laptop with the needed configurations to get you on the wireless network.
If you experience an authentication/password problem, make sure you are using the correct user name (your student ID #) and password (your web registration password). If your laptop needs advanced assistance, you may contact the computer lab supervisor at lab@naropa.edu with questions or to set up an appointment. Please allow 1-2 business days for a response.
Technical information:
Naropa University utilizes a Cisco Clean Access monitored wireless network with 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g support.
