Dharma Punx to ‘Meditate and Destroy’ at Naropa University
Alternative meditation instructor Levine to offer lecture, workshop

BOULDER, Colo. (February 15, 2007)—Buddhist teacher and counselor Noah Levine, author of “Dharma Punx,” will offer a weekend workshop through Naropa University Extended Studies Friday, March 2 through Sunday, March 4, 2007. Levine’s workshop, “Meditate and Destroy,” will help students destroy craving and confusion in order to clarify compassion for all living beings. The workshop will include sitting and walking meditation, Buddhist teachings and discussion.

Levine’s approach to Buddhism comes from his perspective on the futility of certain kinds of rebellion, fueled by his own experiences with punk rock, drugs, violence and dissatisfaction. He teaches his students to look for positive ways to channel their anger at injustice and suffering to awaken their natural wisdom and compassion.

His book and works have inspired many alternative meditation sitting groups across the country, from Los Angeles to New York City, whose group, Dharma Punx NYC, advertises itself with the announcement that “All are welcome (tattoos not required).” Levine was trained by Jack Kornfield of the Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California, and teaches meditation classes, workshops, and retreats nationally as well as leading groups in juvenile halls and prisons.

Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Naropa University is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian liberal arts institution dedicated to advancing contemplative education. This approach to learning integrates the best of Eastern and Western educational traditions, helping students know themselves more deeply and engage constructively with others. The university comprises a four-year undergraduate college and graduate programs in the arts, education, environmental leadership, psychology and religious studies.
