Registration

There are two steps to registering for the Summer Writing Program (SWP): Registering for the weeks you will be attending, then signing up for the workshops that will take place during those weeks. This is done in different ways depending on your classification as a for credit or noncredit student.

Naropa University Degree-Seeking Students: Non-Writing Program

Undergraduate and graduate students already enrolled at Naropa who want to take the summer for academic credit should first see their advisor to determine how the Summer Writing Program (SWP) will fit into their degree. Students should then contact the SWP registration manager at 303-245-4600 to complete a short application process and obtain authorization to register for the SWP weeks. After authorization is obtained, the student must register through the Naropa University web registration system. Students are required to attend the all-departmental meeting in the spring to sign up for workshops.

Naropa University Degree-Seeking Students: Writing Program

Naropa University MFA Writing and Poetics students, MFA Creative Writing and BA students who have already declared their major in Writing and Literature should register for the SWP weeks through web registration. Authorization from SWP is not required. They will register for workshops and work-study jobs by attending the SWP all-departmental meeting on Sunday, March 18, 2007. Low-residency MFA in Creative Writing students will receive information and registration forms via email.

New MFA students in the Writing and Poetics and low-residency Creative Writing programs who are beginning their degree in the summer will register by mail and email for weekly workshops and will register for the SWP weeks through the web registration system after they arrive on campus. Please call the SWP finance and registration manager as soon as possible after submitting your deposit for your degree program to register for workshops. BA and transfer students may not begin their Naropa degree program in the summer, but may take the summer as noncredit or non-degree-seeking students.

There will be specific orientation events for MFA students as well as an online orientation module for low-residency students who will not be attending the on-campus orientation. Noncredit, visiting and undergraduate students are not required to attend orientation.

Writing and Poetics graduate students are encouraged to take all four weeks in order to complete their degree on time. Creative Writing graduate students may opt to take fewer weeks per summer, although all graduate students are ultimately responsible for completing eight weeks of the Summer Writing Program during the course of their degree. All students are highly encouraged to consult with their academic advisor to determine the pacing of their degree.

Visiting Academic Credit Students

Non–Naropa University students may also take the Summer Writing Program for academic credit. Naropa University is fully accredited with the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Contact Naropa's Office of Admissions to complete an application for the Visiting Students Program. The Office of Admissions can be reached at 303-546-3572, 1-800-772-6951 or admissions@naropa.edu. Keep in mind that Summer Writing Program weeks taken for undergraduate credit cannot be later converted to graduate credit, and vice versa, and applicants for graduate credit must have been awarded a bachelor’s degree. Consider carefully whether you need graduate or undergraduate credit. Visiting Students do not use the forms in the catalog to register. After acceptance into the Visiting Student Program, you will be mailed the appropriate registration forms.

Noncredit Students

Noncredit students register for the Summer Writing Program (SWP) by completing the forms in the catalog and submitting them with payment. Students can take the SWP for any combination of the first, second, third and/or fourth weeks. SWP weeks taken for noncredit cannot be converted to credit at a later date. Please consider carefully if you anticipate you may need credit in the future.

To register, use the two forms in the catalog or download a workshop request form here starting April 1, 2007.
